Orthodox worship embodies two essential dimensions, evident across the myriad services of the Church. Firstly, it is a tangible expression of God’s presence and activity among His people. Through Orthodox worship, we vividly experience the truth that God dwells in our midst, inviting us to partake in His divine life.

Second, worship is our corporate response of thanksgiving to the presence of God and a remembrance of His saving actions – especially the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Orthodox Worship is centered upon God.

DIVINE LITURGY

The Divine Liturgy is the central worship service of the Orthodox Church–a sacred encounter in which heaven and earth meet. Through Scripture readings, ancient hymns, and reverent prayers, Orthodox Christians are drawn into the timeless mystery of Christ’s presence among us. The Divine Liturgy includes more than 200 passages from both the Old Testament and the New Testament woven throughout the prayers and hymns. Centered on the Eucharist, the bread and wine are mystically transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, uniting Orthodox Christians who partake in the Eucharist with Him and with one another. At Saint Paul’s, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated every Sunday at 9:30am, as well as on major feast days throughout the year. VESPERS

Vespers marks the beginning of the liturgical day in the Orthodox Church, typically offered in the early evening as the sun begins to set. With psalms, incense, hymns, and prayers, the service leads worshippers into a spirit of quiet reflection and preparation for the coming day. It recalls the creation of the world and God’s enduring mercy, offering praise for the light of Christ that shines even in darkness. Vespers invites us to pause, give thanks, and reorient our hearts toward God as the day comes to a close.

ORTHROS

Orthros, also known as Matins, is the morning service that prepares the Church for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. Rich in Scripture, psalmody, and hymnography, Orthros proclaims the glory of the Resurrection and the hope it brings to the world. Especially on Sundays and feast days, it is filled with joyful praises, theological depth, and a sense of anticipation. This service helps lift the hearts of the faithful at the break of day, reminding them of God’s mercy and the new life offered through Christ.

Orthros begins an hour before the morning Divine Liturgy: 8:30 on Sundays, and 9:00 for weekday Divine Liturgies.

Bible Studies

Monday Night Bible Study for Everyone (M)

The Monday Night Bible Study “for everyone” meets Monday s from 7:30-8:30 pm via Zoom. Check the Sunday bulletin or contact the Church Office or info@stpaulsirvine.org to receive the Zoom link. The class is studying St. Peter’s First Epistle

Women's Bible Study (TH)

Women’s Bible Study is studying Saint Peter’s First Epistle. Meetings take place from 10am until 11 am in the Admin Building Conference Room, as well as hybrid via Zoom. Check the Sunday bulletin or contact the Church Office or info@stpaulsirvine.org to receive the Zoom link.

Koinonia Bible Study (TH)

The Orthodox Koinonia Bible Study meets in-person this Thursday October 30 from 7:30-9:00 pm with a phone-in option. Contact the Church Office or dlangis@stpaulsirvine.org for phone-in information.

Prayer & Fellowship Groups

Praying the Psalms (M-F)

Praying the Psalms group meets at 9 am each weekday morning for Scripture reading and intercessory prayer. Check the Sunday bulletin or contact the church office for the Zoom link.

Men's Prayer Fellowship (TH)

Men’s Prayer Fellowship meets every other Thursday at 7:30 pm in the Saint Paul’s Education Center Library Classroom. Next meeting: Thursday November 6.

Women's Study Fellowship

The Women’s Study Fellowship connects women of our church to Christ, service, and one another. Next meeting this month will be October 27 at 11:00 am, in person in the fireside room.
